Attention travellers! This is not a drill!
Hotel loyalty programs are making a comeback!
It’s time to dust off those points, lock in your perks, and make the most of free nights at your favorite resort. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and World of Hyatt are adding promos, partnerships, and easier paths to status.
All you need to do is commit to a little bit of planning to catch the end-of-year status runs, and your new travel benefits will keep paying off long after 1st January.
What Are End-of-Year Status Runs?
Status runs sound glamorous in theory: fly somewhere for a weekend purely to lock in another year of upgrades, breakfast, and lounge access.
It’s an investment decision for your vacations.
But a status run only tends to make sense when:
- You are within realistic reach of a valuable tier: For example, 5–7 nights shy of Hyatt Globalist when you already have several long stays planned early next year at Park Hyatts.
- You know you will actually use the benefits: Free breakfast, guaranteed late checkout, lounge access, suite upgrades, and better customer service lines.
- You can stack promos and card benefits so that each night earns over and above basic points.
A status run usually does not make sense when:
- You are far from the next tier and would need a dozen or more bed nights with little use on the ground next year.
- Your travel in 2026 will mainly be short, cheap stays or Airbnb-style bookings.
That’s not all you need to think about. The nuances of each program also come into play:
- Hilton’s 2026 changes make Gold and Diamond easier going forward, so it might be smarter to focus on grabbing rollover nights, then let new thresholds carry you the rest of the way.
- Marriott’s soft landing reduces the penalty of missing requalification by a bit, so some travellers will gladly accept a one-tier drop instead of forced, expensive stays in December.
TL;DR: treat status runs like a business decision. If the value of next year’s perks outweighs the cost of locking them in now, lean in. If not, take the soft landing and use promos for points rather than tier chasing.
What’s New Right Now: 2025 Highlights From the Big Three
As a concierge, there are three things I look at to maximize rewards: current promos, how close I am to the next tier, and what the program has announced for the next year.
These three things give me all the context to know where to focus my last trips of the year.
1. Marriott Bonvoy
Marriott is leaning hard into app bookings and targeted offers in late 2025:
- A global “Celebrate 2025” promotion is offering 2,025 bonus points per paid stay (up to 3 stays), with an extra 2,000 bonus points per stay at participating “Outdoors” properties. It’s valid on stays from October 28, 2025, to January 10, 2026, with registration closing on December 27, 2025.
- Separate “Exclusive For You” targeted offers are being pushed to members with bonus points or elite night boosts on select stays through February 2026.
- A Travel Tuesday sale in late November/early December 2025 gives Bonvoy members up to 25% off selected stays booked in-app.
- Marriott has confirmed a soft landing for elite status next year. If you fail to requalify for your current tier in 2025, you will drop one level in 2026. Your renewed status is visible from March 2026 and lasting through February 2027.
For you, that means end-of-year decisions can be more relaxed. If you are Titanium now and can only realistically requalify for Platinum, you are not falling off a cliff. The program will cushion that descent.
2. Hilton Honors
Hilton is going through one of the biggest updates in the major hotel chain space.
From January 1, 2026:
- Requirements for Gold and Diamond status drop. Diamond is reachable from 50 nights instead of 60 or 25 stays instead of 30, or by hitting $11,500 in eligible spend.
- A new Diamond Reserve super-elite tier launches, with perks such as Confirmable Upgrade Rewards, guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout, premium club access, 120% bonus points, and priority customer service.
- Elite rollover nights end after the 2025 activity year. Nights from 2025 can roll once into 2026, then that mechanic disappears.
For 2025, Hilton’s current tier structure still applies, with Diamond requiring 60 nights or 30 stays through December 31, 2025. That combination makes Q4 2025 quite important. Extra nights can now roll into 2026 one last time and help you ride the wave into the easier thresholds and new perks.
3. World of Hyatt
Hyatt spent 2025 tuning the knobs rather than blowing up their loyalty rewards model.
- The hotel chain’s category changes pushed more than 100 properties into higher award categories.Yay! Plus, any bookings made before the changeover meant you got to lock in the old rates.
- Terms & Conditions were updated effective October 31, 2025, formalising earlier tweaks and clarifying how benefits apply across new brands and scenarios.
- Hyatt expanded World of Hyatt to cover more on-property experiences and amenities, letting members earn and redeem points beyond room nights across hundreds of hotels worldwide.
- A regional promotion gives members 2x points up to 20,000 bonus points on qualifying stays in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa through December 20, 2025.
- A separate app-based offer in the US awards up to 20,000 bonus points for eligible nights completed between September 3 and December 31, 2025, on bookings made via the World of Hyatt app.
With all those elite benefits and redemptions, it makes an end-of-year status push worth it.
How to Book, Stack, and Leverage Rates
I rarely rely on a single lever. Instead, I focus on layering benefits.
Book Direct When Status or Points Matter
Most major hotel groups require direct bookings (or corporate channels that count as direct) for:
- Earning points and elite night credits
- Triggering promos such as Marriott’s Celebrate 2025 or Hyatt’s app-only offers.
- Applying benefits like suite upgrades, breakfast, and late checkout
OTAs and opaque discount sites might offer appealing nightly rates, yet will leave you without credit towards levelling up your elite status.
Stack Promos Like a Pro
On a single stay, you could:
- Register for the chain’s global promo (e.g., Marriott’s 2,025 bonus points per stay or Hyatt’s double points regional deals).
- Activate any targeted offers in your account, such as Marriott’s “Exclusive For You” bonuses or Hyatt’s app-based deals.
- Pay with a co-branded or premium travel card that earns extra points on hotel spend.
- Add a corporate or negotiated rate that still qualifies for point earning and elite nights.
The secret?
You’ll want to triple-check each promo’s T&Cs. Most will let you stack as long as the rate is eligible and the stay falls over the promotional window.
Double-Dipping With Credit Cards and Travel Programs
Travel cards are where loyalty really starts to feel like a game you can win! Here’s how you can use yours to stack your rewards and climb loyalty rewards levels.
Marriott Bonvoy Credit Cards
Marriott’s co-branded cards often offer:
- 15 or 25 elite night credits each calendar year just for holding the card, applied automatically toward elite thresholds.
- An annual free night award worth up to a set points cap (often 35,000–50,000 points) on products like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card.
- Additional elite night credits per $5,000 of card spend, in some cases with no cap.
Link those benefits to the standard “stay four nights, get the fifth free” award structure, and you can turn card spend and a few paid stays into longer redemptions.
World of Hyatt Credit Cards
Hyatt’s cards from Chase lean heavily into status acceleration:
- Personal cardholders receive one free night each year and five tier-qualifying nights just for being cardmembers.
- You can earn a second free night by spending $15,000 in a calendar year.
- Both personal and business cards can add five tier-qualifying nights per $10,000 spend, making Globalist possible with a mix of stays and card usage.
Already loyal to Hyatt? Then that combination turns everyday purchases into some very tangible upgrades for your next vacation.
Hilton Honors x American Express
Hilton has one of the strongest card ecosystems:
- The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass and similar products give complimentary Gold status, which brings an 80% points bonus on stays and free breakfast or food-and-beverage credits at many brands.
- Some versions include Priority Pass lounge access with a fixed number of visits per year, so cardholders gain value on both flights and hotel stays.
What does that mean for you?
A single stay at Hilton can generate hotel points, get you close to elite status, and give you airport lounge comfort all with one connected card.
Premium Travel Cards to Top Off Your Loyalty Rewards
Beyond co-branded options, premium cards such as American Express Platinum or Chase Sapphire Reserve add lounge access and hotel status tie-ins:
- The refreshed Amex Platinum from 2026 offers expanded lounge access, up to $600 in hotel credits, and a range of dining and lifestyle credits, though it comes with a higher annual fee of $895.
- The updated Chase Sapphire Reserve now earns 8x points on hotel bookings through Chase Travel and 4x on direct airlines and hotels. It includes complimentary IHG Platinum Elite status, while keeping its $300 annual travel credit.
Travel credit cards (like those above) can be used to pay for Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt stays, which means:
- Hotel points + elite night credits
- Bank points in a transferable program
- Extra perks such as lounge access or travel credits
And you know what that means?
An end-of-year trip can boost your elite status while also feeding a flexible-points balance for future travel!
How to Spend the Rest of 2025
If you want a quick action list before the calendar resets:
- Register for every relevant Marriott, Hilton, and Hyatt promo before your next stay.
- Log in to your accounts and check how many nights you need for a meaningful tier in 2026, then decide if a mini status run is justified.
- Route any remaining 2025 hotel nights toward the chain where you are closest to a threshold and can stack the most benefits.
- Put those stays on a card that either accelerates status with that chain or earns flexible points plus lounge access for the trip.
Loyalty is finally working for travellers again, and year-end is the perfect window to tilt the game in your favour with a few well-aimed trips!
