Nashville was calling my name… and without question, I had to go back. There is something magical about Music City. Bustling, yet relaxed. Historic, yet modern. I think it’s fair to say that Nashville embodies the heartbeat of the country… it is the live music capital of the US after all.

Where to stay while in town?

Imagine a resort where everything is under one roof. Literally. A resort that is the largest non-casino hotel in the US, yet still feels personal and allows you to escape the busyness of the world around you. A destination that transports you into a lush, vibrant world that feels inspired by another era yet modern and comfortable. A place where the sound of water is ever-present, and you find a sense of calm in this Southern oasis.

It exists. It is the Gaylord Opryland Resort.

Now, this trip was a little different for me as I was able to explore more of the property and its neighboring attractions.  There are countless activities to do on property as well as around the resort, but the following are my top six suggestions of things to NOT miss when staying at The Gaylord Opryland.

The Gaylord Opryland Experience

Without a doubt, you’ll be impressed by the sheer size of The Gaylord Opryland. It is a city in and of itself, with restaurants, activities, and even a river running through it. Oh yes, there is a river in the 4.5 acre Delta Atrium that you can actually take a riverboat cruise through. But before I digress, make note of the following…

Dinner at Old Hickory Steakhouse

For those that are familiar with the Gaylord brand, Old Hickory is a staple at their properties. But this location just hits different. Fine dining in an antebellum-inspired mansion, the menu is impressive. Known for their steak, everything on the menu from the Seared Ahi Tuna to the Caramelized Pork Belly was exceptional. Grab a seat on the patio and get front row seats to the nightly light show in the Delta Atrium. It’s the perfect restaurant for a special occasion, date night, or celebration.

Get Massages at Relâche Spa

There is a lot of buzz and activity happening throughout the resort, but don’t miss tucking away into the Relâche Spa at Gaylord Opryland for a massage or relaxing treat. This 20,000 square foot has something (and space) for everyone! With twelve treatment rooms, choose your own relaxing journey from a menu of treatments that includes everything from massages to facials.

PRO TIP: If you are a Nashville resident, you can actually get a membership to take advantage of the common areas, discounts on services, and a complimentary treatment once a month. Take note!

Splash Around at SoundWaves

This is not your normal water park, SoundWaves is an upscale indoor/outdoor water ATTRACTION.Combining music and water experiences into one destination, complete with a lazy river, FlowRider (Indoor Surf experience), wave pool, slides, kiddie area, and even a few adults-only pools. It’s fun for families and adults looking to bring out their inner child (aka me! Take me back to my childhood please!!).

Of course, there is so much more to experience, from the Delta RiverBoat rides to Fuse Sportsbar, American Craft Tavern, and The Falls Bar and Lounge. Every trip can be a unique visit.

The Nashville Experience

Now here’s where it gets interesting. As much as we love a great resort, as travelers, we also want to experience the destination. The Gaylord Opryland has partnerships with various local activities that end up being an “extension” of the resort… so you can have a well-rounded REAL Nashville experience!

Golf at Gaylord Springs Golf Links

A short 5-minute shuttle ride takes you to Gaylord Springs, one of the top public golf courses in Nashville. This Scottish link-style, 18 holes, and par-72 layout is beautifully set along the Cumberland River. Get lessons with one of their pros, hit the driving range, or play the course. Avid golfers will appreciate that Harry Taylor of Taylor Made Golf is often on-site. Fangirl or fanboy responsibly! Keep your cool!

General Jackson Showboat

Wow! All I can say is WOW! This is such a classic and memorable experience—DEFINITELY DO NOT MISS! Ok, let me explain. The General Jackson Showboat is like floating on history. One of the largest showboats ever built, it’s called the Cumberland River home since 1985. Modeled after the older showboats of the later 1800s, you feel like you are stepping back into time. Enjoy dinner and a phenomenal show (hello, performers from America’s Got Talent and The Voice!!) in a two-story Victorian Theater. Of course, the show also happens outside as you cruise past the Nashville skyline at night.

Fried Dill Pickles and Line-Dancing at Wild Horse Saloon

Of course, you can’t come to Nashville without visiting the historic Broadway district. Head to Wild Horse Saloon for dinner and line-dancing. They offer free classes every evening. PRO TIP: Come early, order the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich and the Famous Fried Dill Pickles, then hit the dance floor!
