As the year draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the moments that moved us, the places that wowed us, and the journeys that changed us.
After all, travel isn’t about collecting passport stamps. It’s about the connections we make, the lessons we learn, and the unforgettable moments that stay with us long after we’ve unpacked.
So, I thought I’d end the year with 12 powerful reasons to be grateful for travel this year — and every year.
1. It Gave Me New Perspectives on the World
Travel opens our eyes to lives, stories, and experiences far beyond our own. Whether it’s immersing ourselves in vibrant traditions or witnessing the nuances of daily life in a distant land, each journey invites us to expand our worldview.
My adventure along the Mekong River Region felt like a kaleidoscope of sensory experiences. The vivid colors of the marketplaces, the fragrant street food mingling with the chatter of locals, and the humbling sight of fishermen casting their nets at sunrise — each moment pulled me deeper into an appreciation for this incredible world and really took me out of my usual travel mode.
2. I Met Incredible People Along the Way
The essence of a place often lies in its people. This year, I’ve shared laughter, stories, and meals with countless kindred spirits — from fellow wanderers to locals who generously welcomed me into their lives.
Traveling with a community of creative minds also deepened my experiences, transforming mere destinations into cherished memories. Whether navigating winding streets or sharing tales over candlelit dinners, these connections became the heartbeats of my journeys.
3. I Had Countless Moments of Awe and Wonder
There are few things more powerful than standing before a natural wonder or a jaw-dropping monument that leaves you in complete awe. From the first sight of the Grand Canyon to witnessing the Northern Lights, these moments remind us of the beauty that exists beyond our daily routines.
For me, this year’s ultimate moment of awe came at Angkor Wat. The play of light at dawn, with golden hues illuminating centuries of history, and exploring the ruins is still something I can hardly put into words.
4. I Ticked Off Bucketlist Culinary Experiences
The flavors of travel linger long after the journey ends. From street food stands to Michelin-starred restaurants, each dish tells a story about a culture’s history, geography, and traditions.
This year, I indulged in a culinary symphony at the “Taste of Lovango” event in the USVI. World-class chefs created plates that were as much an art form as they were a feast, with dishes that celebrated both local ingredients and global techniques.
It’s a culinary experience I’ll never forget!
5. It Forced Me to Step Outside of My Comfort Zones
Travel is the ultimate test of resilience and flexibility, and this year, it stretched me in ways I couldn’t have anticipated.
My whirlwind journey across eight countries in just 21 days was as thrilling as it was challenging. Each leg of the trip demanded something different: decoding unfamiliar airport signage, adjusting to local regulations, and adapting on the fly when plans changed unexpectedly.
These small tests built my confidence. It wasn’t just about getting from point A to point B — it was about proving to myself that I could adapt, stay calm, and thrive under pressure.
6. It Gave Me The Gift of Unplugging
When we travel, especially to remote areas, we’re often forced to disconnect from technology. Without constant notifications, there’s room for reflection, mindfulness, and being present.
This year, I told myself at the beginning of the year I wanted more trips that were “for fun.” Yes, I travel for a living, and yes, it is fun. But I was craving unique places that would allow me to be off the grid for a bit. From Costa Rica to Laos to Cambodia, China, Myanmar, and so much more, I definitely achieved that!
7. I Learnt to Appreciate The Moments Between Itineraries
There’s nothing like the feeling of discovering something new, a hidden beach, a quiet cafe, or a secret lookout point that isn’t on any travel blog. Travel fills us with curiosity, and with that comes the thrill of “finding” something special.
I’m all for the moments in between the scheduled itineraries. From cute cafes in Costa Rica with my cousins to my second trip to Costa Rica, where I extended my stay a few days to stay with locals. I felt a bit like I was playing hooky but also truly living!
8. I Learnt to Appreciate My Home a Little More
As much as we love to wander, travel reminds us of what we love about home. The joy of returning to your own bed, the familiarity of home-cooked meals, and the little comforts we often take for granted become so much clearer after being away.
This year, with 103 flights and 51 destinations, my moments at home became more treasured. Who knew how meaningful that local hike in my backyard could feel so… grounding?
9. I Embraced The Beauty of Spontaneity
Sometimes, the best moments are unplanned. Travel teaches us to say “yes” more often and trust that the unknown can be magical.
This year, I definitely said YES a whole lot more. From last-minute extended trips to inviting new friends to come to stay with me and play tourist in my own town, many YESES were had!
10. It Reminded Me to Reconnect With Nature’s Healing Powers
Nature is a natural healer, and travel often puts us in close contact with it. Whether hiking a mountain, walking on a beach, or exploring a lush rainforest, being surrounded by nature is restorative.
I’ve always enjoyed being in the outdoors, and I am so lucky that I get to experience some of the most luxurious hotels in the world, but some of my favorite moments included being out and exploring nature.
From hiking the Appalachian Trail with family to the Stone Forest in China to a quick day trip to the Oregon Coast after speaking in Portland. Nature is good for the soul.
11. I Got to Celebrate Career Milestones Because of Travel
Travel has a way of making life’s milestones feel even more momentous.
I’m not one for taking the time to pat myself on the back, but there were two incredible moments this year. First, I was so proud to complete a huge shoot in Key West with my dear friend Anthony Melchiorri, the team at DNC Media, my closest friend Kalindra Ashleigh, and the team over at Curator. That was a professional milestone.
Another one that I really can’t forget, was doing my first TEDx in Davenport, Iowa on October 10th. Not only was it an achievement in and of itself, BUT I got selected as an Editor’s Pick. Talk about a personal WOW moment!
12. It Taught Me I’m Capable of More Than I Realize
Every trip challenges us in different ways: navigating airports, dealing with delays, finding our way in new cities, and making quick decisions.
My business has a few verticals, and I’m constantly managing 8-12 different projects at a time. I sometimes get wary about long trips, but this year, I realized I really could manage multiple projects of varying levels WHILE being away from my home office.
I always feel like I do my best work at home, but the reality is that most of my work is mobile. So this year was a big year of really leaning into that.
