Travel news this week: TSA may loosen the water bottle rule, airfare is still putting pressure on travelers, and the FAA is rolling out new technology designed to reduce flight delays.
In other words: getting through the airport may get easier. Paying for the flight? Not so much. 😂
The biggest thing I want travelers to understand is that none of these headlines exists in a vacuum.
TSA’s water bottle change is only being considered right now.
Airfare being up broadly does NOT mean every flight you search is 23% more expensive.
And new FAA technology is not going to magically eliminate thunderstorms and cancellations.
But together, they tell us a lot about where air travel is going: smarter technology, higher costs, and a lot more emphasis on managing disruption before it spirals.
Also: shoulder season is not a discount code.

I got $1,000 to take a later flight… but honestly, that wasn’t the best part. ❤️
I was walking to the lounge at JFK when I passed my gate and heard them offering $800 for someone to take a later flight.
Normally, I’d keep walking. I’m usually in a rush to get home.
But I could work from the lounge, the later flight was direct, and the only thing I’d miss was a workout class.
So I thought… hmmm, maybe I’ll play. 😂
I went up to the gate agent, and said: “Hey… this later flight is direct, right?”
She said yes, and I figured let’s do it.
By the time everything was finalized, the offer had gone up to $1,000. And I got lucky on the next flight to make the upgrade list.
Before I left, I said, “Here’s a little something for you.”
The way she lit up! I told her, “What goes around comes around. Thank YOU.”
Sure, the whole situation made my day. But getting to make hers? That was the best part.
We spend so much time talking about customer experience. But the people creating that experience deserve to feel seen, too. ❤️

Meanwhile, a UK air-traffic-control outage caused thousands of flight cancellations, and Hurricane Lowell impacted Hawaiʻi, particularly Kauaʻi.
But here’s the theme running through all three stories:
**Travel headlines need context.**
A technical problem being “fixed” does not mean flight schedules instantly recover.
A hurricane affecting one island does not mean an entire state is closed.
And apparently not having a boarding pass no longer automatically means you cannot get to the gate.

Labor Day travel is looking expensive, American Airlines is adding more premium seats, and the U.S. travel industry is worried about fewer international visitors.
My take? Travel is still booming, but it is becoming more divided.
Some travelers are paying for ease, comfort, and convenience. Everyone else has to get smarter about what a trip actually costs.
Because value does not always mean cheap.
Sometimes value is the direct flight.
Sometimes it’s the hotel in the right location.
Sometimes it’s not becoming your own unpaid travel agent before you even leave.

Well, this was FUN!
I joined @tripleseat’s CEO Michelle Fischer at Tripleseat IGNITE to talk about the future of hospitality. And yes, AI came up. Because apparently we’re no longer allowed to have a conversation about the future without inviting AI into the room. 😂
But here’s the truth: technology can make hospitality faster and more efficient. It still can’t replace someone who knows how to read the room, notice what isn’t being said and understand the request beneath the request.
A few of my favorite takeaways:
“AI should handle the volume. Humans should handle the nuance.”
Premium should mean emotionally valuable, not simply more expensive.
And if technology makes the operation more efficient but the experience less human? That isn’t progress.

Your first cruise comes with a learning curve and apparently no one hands you the manual.
Your luggage may arrive hours after you do. Your phone can connect to an expensive maritime network. The best restaurants and excursions may book up quickly. And “all aboard” is very much a deadline.
None of this should scare you away from cruising. A little preparation simply prevents avoidable surprises and lets you enjoy the trip once you’re onboard.
Save this before your first cruise, and send it to the friend who would absolutely miss the ship because they were ordering one more margarita.

Book connecting flights with enough room for delays, long lines, gate changes, and reality.
